This park is a green ocean in the very heart of the asphalt jungle in Gothenburg City; a place to lay back, relax and be inspired. Within lawns and flower fields covered with native and foreign plants alongside its historical buildings represent the golden age of horticulture. With smooth lines, the park has a very characteristic style from the 19th century atmosphere.

Its hallmark is the Palm House, built in glass and wrought iron, a completely work of art in the centre of the park. Inspired on the famous Crystal Palace in London, it has been a popular place to visit since 1878. And with almost 1,000 square metres in size it hosts a rich variety of exotic plants and palms.

Basic tasks for the garden have since the beginning been education and scientific research. As a public park, horticulture and recreation have also been important components in the work.

Since 1936, the Botanical Garden has had an active collaboration with the University of Gothenburg and functions as its excursion and research garden.
